Brief: Design a coffee machine to be used in a domestic environment. A new method of making coffee must not be invented, the product should be original and full of character based around already existing technology. A consumer group will need to be identified to base the product around.
Chosen Consumer: The product was aimed at a middle aged, tech savvy character, passionate about technology. They need the latest and newly released high end product and are willing to spend a great deal. They will need their drink ready to go in the morning so would love the machine to be based around an app.
Design Proposal: It was decided upon to create an automatic, bean to cup filter machine, where an app will be incorporated to use the product. This would mean a hopper and grinder must be included on the machine, in addition to this, it must have the ability to use a travel mug.
Development on getting to this stage will be shown below in order.
All of this development was required to ensure the product could be manufactured, this also took into account all of the important features and problems found on a standard filter machine.
Blue foam model making was required to understand form and function.
2D illustrations were created using adobe illustrator
A Solidworks file was then made with the chosen concept before rendering on Keyshot.
Here is an exploded view of the whole product.
The two halves of the product and water tank housing are injection moulded polypropylene - these all have a matt, dark grey finish. The cladding on the front are die cast in stainless steel which have a shiny, metallic, space grey finish.
The water tank is made from clear poly-carbonate which is removed from the rear.
The filter, filter housing and filter lid will all be injection moulded polypropylene. The main hopper and the lid will all be injection moulded poly-carbonate. Finally the sleeve will be made from die cast stainless steel.
Product range: This shows how different colours can be used.
This is the app named BeanAndGone, it can be used with ease due to the simple layout and instructions. Alerts will be sent to the users phone if something needs filling up or if a component is out of place.
